Getting a Mortgage as an Expat

If you are looking to get a mortgage in the UK but currently live abroad, it may be a complicated process but there is help out there.

Expat’s searching for mortgages in the United Kingdom have more choices now. A few specialist lenders have launched buy to let products which cater for clients living overseas. They are offering fixed and variable deals, which would suit a purchase or remortgage.

Around 5 million UK nationals now live abroad; many of them want to keep hold of their property in England as an investment or a regular income.

It’s also easier to get a mortgage in the UK from some countries than others. The majority of mortgage lenders in this market have a list of countries where the can and can’t lend. (Due to sanctions on the country or a poor record on regulation)

The mortgages that are available to them are restricted, that’s why you would need to speak to a specialised mortgage broker.

Once you have secured your mortgage and property, please remember to keep the tax office updated. If you live overseas for 6 months plus per year you will be classed as a non – resident landlord by HMRC. It’s always best to speak to HMRC if you have any questions or a local tax advisor.
